Samsung is currently the only smartphone maker that produces handsets with screens stretching to the sides. Xiaomi is expected to give competition to Samsung handsets as a leaked image shows the Chinese handset maker is working on a device dubbed Mi Edge that will also have screens extending to the sides of the phone.
Xiaomi is the leading smartphone seller in China, and the company has many smartphones on offer. However, the rumored Mi Edge will be the first Xiaomi handset that will have screens on the side of the handset just like the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and the Galaxy Note Edge.
Chinese technology blog Mobile Dad has leaked an image of the Xiaomi Mi Edge and suggests that the smartphone is inspired by the Galaxy S6 Edge and the company's own Mi Note.
The Mi Edge is estimated to sport a 5.2-inch dual-curve 2K display with 2,560 x 1,440 pixels resolution. The screen will be made by Sharp and will extend to both sides of the smartphone, similar to the Galaxy S6 Edge.
A hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor and either 3GB of RAM or 4GB of RAM are expected to power the Mi Edge. Rumors claim that the handset will be equipped with a 16MP primary camera with optical image stabilization (OIS). The smartphone will also have finger print scanning.
Xiaomi is yet to unveil details of the smartphone, but if rumors are true then the Mi Edge will definitely compete directly with the Galaxy S6 Edge.
Mobile Dad also reports that the Mi Edge will have a price tag of around 2,500 Yuan, or about US$350, which is way cheaper than the Galaxy S6 Edge.
Xiaomi is expected to take the wraps off the Mi Edge sometime in October. However, an exact launch date of the device remains unknown. It is also unclear if the Xiaomi Mi Edge will be released in regions outside China.
Xiaomi launched its flagship handset Mi 4 in July 2014 and the Mi 5 is expected to be launched soon. Market observers believe that Xiaomi will launch the Mi Edge and the Mi 5 together.Â
